Anticipation | The Lunchtime Portraits

I was worried that this dog would move before I could get my photo, …

… but I stood by and observed for a moment after the photo, and my worries were unfounded. He was still in the same dedicated stance when I left as when I’d first encountered him.

Gazes | The Lunchtime Portraits

Passing down St Michael’s Street recently, I was struck by the intense mutual fondness in this staring contest, …

Gazes | The Lunchtime Portraits

… all framed perfectly in the surrounding doorway. I figured that I probably wouldn’t get the shot without disrupting the scene, so I chanced asking directly whether they’d mind a photo. They not only did not mind, they also fell right back into the gaze.

Right on.

Shoes

I have this propensity for discovering abandoned shoes, in pairs, just sitting there like an afterimage. What you see is what I found. And there is always a sense of something else afoot, too. Some part of the story about which I haven’t been made aware.

Is the footwear really abandoned? Could the invisible occupant still be in residence? Or does a plainly visible owner intend to eventually return for the set? No answers have come, but regardless, I’ve only just started paying closer attention, and this happens a lot. So much so that I finally resolved to record the occurances on film, each time I stumble upon a pair seemingly adrift, …

Cowley Road Carnival, 2016

Cowley Road Carnival, 2016

Cowley Road recently saw it’s 16th annual carnival and parade on Sunday, 10 July. I am the husband of a dancer in the community band, Sol Samba, so I’ll admit, the coverage is a bit samba-heavy.

So where does an introvert spend a carnival, so well attended? Why, right in the middle of the street parade, of course, hiding behind a camera, and going with the flow of traffic. By far, the quickest way from one end of Cowley to the other during a carnival like this one.

Humanity flows
Parting but for an island
Zen, but not really

It was nearing the end of a lunchtime walk with my Wife when we encountered this scene on the High Street in Oxford. A homeless man had collapsed on the sidewalk and was in and out of consciousness, and these two generous people were trying to render assistance. What struck me about the moment was the way in which the man and his guardians created little islands in the detoured, but otherwise undeterred, flow of pedestrians down the sidewalk.

Footwear | The Lunchtime Portraits

As is often the case, I could see The Photo coalescing from down the street, …

Footwear I | The Lunchtime Portraits

… so having metered and set my camera on approach, I kneeled down in front of the couple, and took my photo. I was finished well before they noticed me and realized that I was holding a camera.

One thing that I frequently appreciate about a twin lens camera: it is naturally invested with a quality that causes people the desire to be photographed by it. They’re intrigued, perhaps, by its other-ness, where they might otherwise be put-off at the thought of being photographed by a strange SLR or something which they more immediately recognize as a camera.

Whatever the reason, though, a photographer likes a willing subject. This couple subsequently asked me to take a photo, so I happily asked them to just continue as they were doing.
