Footwear | The Lunchtime Portraits

As is often the case, I could see The Photo coalescing from down the street, …

Footwear I | The Lunchtime Portraits

… so having metered and set my camera on approach, I kneeled down in front of the couple, and took my photo. I was finished well before they noticed me and realized that I was holding a camera.

One thing that I frequently appreciate about a twin lens camera: it is naturally invested with a quality that causes people the desire to be photographed by it. They’re intrigued, perhaps, by its other-ness, where they might otherwise be put-off at the thought of being photographed by a strange SLR or something which they more immediately recognize as a camera.

Whatever the reason, though, a photographer likes a willing subject. This couple subsequently asked me to take a photo, so I happily asked them to just continue as they were doing.

Filming Endeavour in Oxford, Part One

Filming Endeavour in Oxford

I was walking through Radcliffe Square one day when there appeared before me a shiny, classic bus. And people. Classic people! With a bus! All set out perfectly photogenically, as if to test Dave to see if he’s on top of things and carrying his camera today. Well, I am, ha!

And, no, it turns out that this scene was actually laid out for a crew filming the TV series, Endeavour, a frequent sight in Oxford, today using the Radcliffe Camera, the surrounding square, and outer wall of All Souls College as stage setting.

This is so frequent an occurrence, in fact, that there are still more photos to come. Stay tuned …

Sketching a Library | The Lunchtime Portraits

Sketching a Library | The Lunchtime Portraits

Oxford draws a lot of artists, so the Bodleian Library is not a surprising place to find someone with a sketching table and project. This is local painter, Merlin Porter. While we were talking, we exchanged business cards, but not before he busied himself with his own card. What happened in that very brief moment was an instant pencil portrait of me with my camera. Coolest thing ever.

The Assembly of a William Blake Press

The Assembly of a William Blake Press

In preparation for Copper Impressions – The 18th Century Printmaking Revolution, an exhibition and printmaking demonstration at Christ Church Library in Oxford, carpenters worked alongside Professor Michael Phillips, internationally recognized William Blake scholar, to assemble the pieces of a copper-plate printing press that Phillips used in his workshops.

This press, a working replica of the one used by 19th-century poet, painter, and printmaker, William Blake, was built locally by Buckinghamshire maker/designer, Josh Howard-Saunders, and it arrived at The Library just following its recent stay in Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum.

Film Roll, 15 December 2014

This roll of film had a rough end to it. I don’t remember having any trouble, but I must have fumbled it, taking it out of the camera, because I definitely lost a few frames to light damage. For others, some shown here, I had to do some pretty hefty repairs in Photoshop. As well, I think that something must have rested against the emulsion side as it was drying, otherwise, I can’t explain some of the distortion in the last frame, below.

Steam Train at Oxford Central

I received a tip, back in December of last year, that there would be a steam train pulling into Oxford Central. So, there I was, on the day. I had myself planted and ready to take a great money shot of the locomotive pulling into the station, when some woman stepped out, right in front of me to take a mobile phone snap. Thanks, lady. Well, I still got a few shots that made me happy, even still. (Ha!)

This guy above was being scolded by the platform attendant for going over the yellow line, despite repeated warnings.

Ashmolean Museum

This last shot was taken in the Ashmolean Museum, and it took the most light damage. Even though I liked the composition and the weird effect of the emulsion damage that I mentioned earlier, I was still going to write it off. When my wife saw it and immediately mourned for it, I decided to do some tinkering with the scanned image. I usually don’t spend much time digitally manipulating my images, so I enjoyed the attempt to save this one. Think of it as my tribute to Escher.
